About Three Point Five

Visit Website

We deliver training in climate science, policy and the human skills needed to address climate change. Both public and private sector organisations have set ambitious net zero targets. Reaching them will not be easy however. It will require the buy-in of everyone in those organisations – and that’s where Three Point Five come in. Our role is to help drive the culture change needed to deliver tough climate goals by educating, informing and empowering people. By doing this we not only help organisations reach their climate objectives, we also help wider society to tackle climate change. We called ourselves Three Point Five as this is the percentage of the population researchers believe is needed to push through sweeping, positive changes. We see our broader purpose as helping to build this 3.5% of the public who are engaged, informed and prepared to act on climate change – across business, the public and beyond.

Rick has a background in climate science and journalism and is passionate about driving change by making climate change easily understood. His research has been published in the journal of Atmospheric Pollution Research, been cited by policy makers and featured in newspaper and BBC TV reports. His study on the effects of nitrogen dioxide pollution served as a catalyst for Brighton to work towards a car free city centre. Thanks to an MSc (distinction) in Carbon Management from Edinburgh University he has a grounding in all aspects of climate science and policy – and is always looking for ways to break this information down for a general audience. He regularly writes about climate change for national newspapers and magazines, including The Times, The Sunday Express, Vice magazine and the Daily Star, where his fortnightly column brings environmental issues to a tabloid readership. It is this combination of down to earth communication and academic knowledge that means he can provide both accurate and easy to grasp training.

Carbon Literacy

5/5

Most of us have some knowledge and a level of concern about climate change and how our behaviours and actions continue to have an adverse impact on the planet. The Carbon Literacy course really opens our eyes to both the level of damage we are causing and the urgency with which we need to start changing what we do, both personally and in our workplaces. This is a highly educational experience and includes a number of measures we can all take to reduce emissions and prevent harm going forward. I highly recommend it.

Thanks so much for the training last week – it was great! The blend of statistics and real-world examples were presented in a way which was accessible for people with different levels of knowledge and understanding. Both course instructors were incredibly approachable and made the sessions fun and educational.

It was great. Three Point Five incorporated small touches that made it relevant to our council, got them to use our town names, talk about our projects etc. which went down really well and localised the whole thing. They were very receptive to changes. We had some concerns as to how it might work though zoom, but it was very engaging with, polls, interaction, and small breakout tasks, we need not have worried. We have received really positive feedback from members (even the ones that are less supportive / aware), and employees.

Excellent presenter – I hardly ever say that! – but she, Rachel, was really, really good, so clear, friendly, authoritative, engaging and I was overjoyed the training covered food and agriculture, this was money well spent on our part as I think it was just what was needed to inform and galvanise staff and councillors in a positive way.

You and Rachel covered a lot of material over the two sessions on, but it was all relevant to Carbon Literacy and very clearly expressed. The different types of activity – presentations, multiple choice questions, surveys via the chat box, and group discussions – were motivating and helped the group to bond. You were always willing to answer questions but kept to the course schedule. All in all, you did an excellent job of designing and presenting the course, and I am very happy to have been one of the trainees for this extremely important Carbon Literacy course. It was interesting, informative and comprehensive, and I recommend it keenly.

I found the sessions incredibly helpful and thought-provoking as well as genuinely enjoyable. I had wondered in advance whether 8 hours of learning over 4 weeks might be a bit excessive/’heavy going’, but afterwards I thought that all aspects covered were definitely very useful and important to all of us. Whilst we won’t need to communicate all that fine detail down to our residents, now having that greater level of knowledge will make me more confident in being an advocate to my constituents, for the kind of radical decisions and major behaviour changes all of us are going to have to make, to achieve our targets and quite frankly save the planet for our children (and I no longer see this kind of statement as over-dramatic or alarmist, it’s a fact). Working in ‘breakout’ groups with members of other parties made me realise there’s a lot of shared viewpoints and common ground, so I hope that’s a positive sign that party politics won’t stand in the way of us making the right collective decisions on this. The presenter was really good. This subject matter inevitably can’t avoid containing some technical terminology and data, but this was presented and explained in terms we could all understand. He responded comprehensively to all our questions and comments. Having a difficult/technical subject presented to us by someone with an engaging personality and enthusiastic delivery, as well as thorough knowledge of the information, really helped the learners take in and embed the information.

The training was fantastic. Very good trainer who explained things really well, and I think it focused all of our minds on what needs to be done.

I just wanted to say how great that climate change training was, Rachel was very engaging. I like how it was localised to SWT, a balanced level of detail – enough to get the message across, good pace and interactive. The content was also delivered very neutrally so great for people who are a bit sceptical! I’ve heard really positive feedback from others too.”
